Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair:
- Increased energy bills: If your energy bills are on the rise and have gone up dramatically compared to last yere, it could signal it’s time to repair or replace your furnace.
- How long since your furnace was serviced: If you inherited the furnace when you bought your house you may not know how long it’s been. Furnace neglect is the number one reason for replacement. If you don’t know, jump to it and schedule a maintenance checkup.
- Yellow Pilot Light: The pilot light that runs inside the furnace should be a clean, bright blue color. It if looks yellow, that could be a sing that your furnace has a carbon monoxide leak, which is highly poisonous gas, so make sure to get it checked immediately.
- Dust Near Your Furnace Vents: Excess dust near your vents is a sign that something isn’t right. Do you change your air filters regularly? Filters help the unit catch dust and keep the air clean. A dusty build up indicates your indoor air quality has decreased and it means it’s time to schedule a maintenance call.
- Strange Noises: Your furnace shouldn’t be making any noise other than the sound of it running so if you hear pops, creaks, booms or any other noise consider it a warning sign that something is not right. Schedule a service call right away.
- Strange Smell: Your furnace is designed to provide years of safe, clean, and quiet operation. If you notice an unusual odor coming from your furnace, it could indicate an impending failure or a serious safety issue. Call us right away!
- It takes forever to heat up your house: Are you noticing that it’s taking longer to heat up your home, especially in Pittsburgh’s winter months? Your furnace may be working harder than it should be. Stay a step ahead of the issue and schedule a service call today.
Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair:
- Do you hear strange noises? The normal sound of a heat pump running is a soft humming sound. If you are hearing rattles, groans, pops, or cracking noises it is a sign that your heat pump needs to be looked at right away.
- Are there strange smells? Any unusual smell is a signal to get immediate service. You may have mold growing that could be spread through your home’s air. A burning smell could be a broken or worn-out belt in your heat pump.
- Is your electric bill higher than normal? A spike in your electric bill should prompt you to get a service call scheduled.
- Does your heat pump running but not heating or cooling your home? This is a sure sign that something is wrong. If you feel a strong air flow but the air temperature is wrong, it’s time for a service call.
- Hot and cold spots in your home.
- Are you noticing humidity problems in your home? Condensation around your windows or any other humidity issues should be addressed.
- Excessive dust throughout your home.
Signs Your Boiler Needs Repair:
- Energy consumption is on the rise. And so is your energy bill. An unexpectedly high reading or bill could point to a boiler acting up.
- Strange Noise: A boiler may make a whistling sound, which is a clear sign that you need service.
- Takes longer to heat things up: This is a tell-tale sign that your boiler is not working properly. Catch this early could mean the difference between a simple repair or forking out for a new boiler.
- Leaking water: Puddles near your boiler is a very bad sign. A water leak can mean only one thing – the boiler is not working; it could be a part wearing away or more. Get service immediately.
- Nasty smell: A bad smell needs urgent professional attention as it could be a deadly carbon monoxide leak.
Should I repair or replace my heating system?
It’s a great question that we hear all the time. The answer is that it depends on a few factors. We’ll consider the age of your furnace; heat pump or boiler and what the problem is. For example, if your furnace is newer and needs just a minor issue, it probably makes sense to fix it. However, if your equipment is more than 10 years old and you’re faced with a more expensive repair it could mean it’s time for a newer high efficiency system. Today’s systems offer higher efficiencies that may have rebates or incentives. Also, financing options are also available.
Understanding Efficiencies
If it’s time to replace your heating equipment, it’s worth comparing efficiencies, especially if your system is more than 10 years old. Today’s equipment is much more efficient, to compare your old unit to a new unit, it’s helpful to understand how heating equipment is measured as it relates to efficiencies.
Furnace Efficiencies: The efficiency of your furnace is measured in AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). The higher the AFUE rating, the greater the efficiency of the furnace. As your furnaces ages or experiences technical difficulties the efficiency of the unit will lower. With regular furnace maintenance you can extend the life and help keep it at peak performance.
Heat Pump Efficiencies: The coefficient of Performance (COP) is used to measure the efficiency of heat pumps where the unit is more efficient if the values are higher. The COP is calculated as the energy output of the heat pump divided by the amount of energy required to run the device.
Boiler Efficiencies: Are calculated by dividing the boiler output (in BTUs) by the boiler input (in BTUs) and multiplying by one hundred. The actual input and output of the boiler are determined through instrumentation and the resulting data is used in calculations that determine the fuel-to-steam efficiency.
